Aquaponics Program
Aquaponics set up arrival
Sowilo is lucky enough to have an amazing aquaponics set up in our outdoor area where students can learn all about the workings of the system.
Aquaponics blends aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution). Our simple aquaponics system involves using a grow bed for plants, and aquarium for raising fish. These two components work symbiotically to create a working aquaponics system.
We are able to grow vegetables here which are used to feed our chickens.
This program covers:
- weekly pH testing and Nitrite testing
- cleaning and caring for the tanks
- monitoring the ecosystems and making changes where appropriate (if some fish are eating others for example!)
- working out volume and capacity to make water changes
